Biography
Padaeng or Daeng Soetigna was originally a teacher and graduated from the Teacher’s School in 1928 then continued the Music School in Jakarta. He graduated from Australia Music Academy and in 1955. His interest in angklung grew and developed since entering the Music School. He truly realized that the angklung that had existed since the seventeenth century had almost disappeared. So thanks to his talent and passion, along with a great desire to revive angklung, a diatonic angklung was made and successfully played in a Scouting Rally in Bandung.
After making several other achievements, Padaeng received the title as Bapak Angklung (The Father of Angklung) and gained the trust of the President’s Palace so that he was always ready with his angklung group to fill official state events. Then his angklung group was given the name Angklung Padaeng.
One of the cadres from Angklung Padaeng is Sanu’I Edia S, a teacher in Bandung who leads the Angklung Padaeng Orchestra at SMA Negeri 1 Bandung.
About the Album

Story
Angklung is a traditional musical instrument from West Java. Angklung is made of bamboo blades arranged in such a way that when it is vibrated or shaken it produces a distinctive sound. To get a harmonious tone, angklung must be played by many people. Because one angklung only represents one scale or one note.
Angklung is one of the charms of Indonesian culture which is an attraction for foreign tourists. Moreover, UNESCO has recognized angklung as a World Cultural Heritage, and is included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
One of Indonesia’s tourism destinations that makes angklung as an attraction is the Saung Angklung Mang Udjo Art Studio in Bandung. Mang Udjo is not alone. Since 1938, Daeng Soetigna has developed diatonic angklung. This work is considered a tradition breaker, because the angklung musical instrument which originally used pentatonic scales was changed to diatonic.
The pentatonic angklung is only able to play five notes, so it is commonly used to play Sundanese and Javanese music. After being changed to diatonic, the angklung has seven notes that are one and a half notes apart or commonly known as do-re-mi-fa-so-la-si-do. With Pak Daeng’s findings, angklung can be used to play various kinds of songs, including foreign songs.
A year after Indonesia’s independence, on November 11, 1946, when the Linggarjati Negotiations were held in Kuningan Regency, West Java, Daeng Soetigna was trusted by the President to hold his angklung performance. Twelve days later the performance was repeated again, this time at the State Palace during a reception in connection with the withdrawal of British and Indian troops from Indonesia.
As a teacher, Padaen’s career continues. In 1956 when he returned from the Kangaroo Country, he was appointed as a sound art teaching consultant in schools in Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Balige, and Ambon. He also served as Head of the West Java Cultural Bureau in 1957 followed by the position of Head of the Bandung Karawitan Conservatory.
Then, in 1964, Pak Daeng retired from civil service. Daeng Soetigna was born in Garut on May 13, 1908 and died in 1983 in Bandung at the age of 75 years.
Important Value
Daeng Sutigna’s spirit to preserve angklung deserves appreciation. His efforts to develop angklung which was originally a musical instrument with a pentatonic tone to a diatonic tone made angklung spread more widely.

Biography

Sebab satu angklung hanya mewakili satu tangga nada saja.
The pentatonic angklung is only able to play five notes, so it is usually used to play Sundanese and Javanese songs. After being changed to diatonic, the angklung has seven notes that are one and a half notes apart, or commonly known as Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do. With Mr. Daeng's findings, angklung can be used to play various kinds of songs, even international songs.
Sebagi guru, karier Padaen terus berlanjut.
Then, in 1964, Pak Daeng retired from being a civil servant.
