The album Gandrung Seblang was supported by Supinah, Kusniah, and Sulastri. Supinah was born in Banyuwangi, October 10, 1965. Kusniah died, Monday December 4, 2017. Unfortunately, There is no data abaout Sulastri’s.

About the Album

Gandrung Seblang was released by Khatulistiwa Record in 2005. Contains six compositions. Supinah, Kusniah and Sulastri, each filled one composition. Two songwriters each, Tuky Efendi and S Mamang, contributed one composition. Gandrung music consists of drums, gongs, kethuk, kluncing and violin melodies. The beat of the drums and the friction of the violin are very dominant. The narrator/dalang guides the stage in Indonesian, Javanese. Unfortunately, the names of the music players who support this album are not written on the album.


The Seblang Ritual is one of the ceremonial rituals of the Osing community which can only be found in two villages within the Glagah sub-district, Banyuwangi, East Java namely the villages of Baungan and Bysari. This ritual is carried out for the purpose of cleaning the village and rejecting reinforcements, so that the village remains in a safe and peaceful condition. This ritual is similar to the Sintren ritual in the Cirebon area, or Sanghyang dedari on the island of Bali.

The implementation of the Seblang dance in the two villages is at different times, in Bysari village it is held one week after Eid al-Fitr with female dancers who are still virgins, while in the adjacent Baungan village, it is held a week after Eid al-Adha and the dancers must be menopausal women. However, both of them also have something in common, namely that they are both danced for seven consecutive days in a condition where the dancer is in a ancestral spirit trance. The dancers are chosen supernaturally by someone who is usually called the local community as Gambuh or also known as a handler, and usually the dancers must be chosen from the descendants of the previous seblang dancers.

SUPINAH. Supinah was born in Banyuwangi, October 10, 1965. She just finished elementary school. She didn’t expect to have the opportunity to dance in several countries such as Singapore, North Korea, China, the United States and Australia. Supinah learned to dance Gandrung since she was 8 years old. The result of her perseverance Studying dance and vocals led her to become a passionate professional in 1979 when she was 14 years old. Performing as a gandrung terop who must be able to dance and sing all night long with excellent stamina. She maintained her voice quality and beautiful face until 1987. Since then, Gandrung Supinah has only been a singer, relying on vocals with “twisted” and distinctive vibrations. The vocal sound of gandrung has the face of a sweet village woman, which has led her to sell as a singer and soap opera actor in the TV series.

Based on the notes from Aekanu, an art observer from Banyuwangi, Supinah’s distinctive voice attracted Garin Nugroho’s attention to sing Impen-impenen’s song in his movie “Cinta Dalam Sepotong Roti” and succeeded in making Garin Nugroho as “The Best Young Director” at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in Seoul in 1992 .

In order to preserve the traditional art of Osing, Supinah founded the Sayu Sarinah Art Studio in Bysari Village, Glagah District, Banyuwangi. Unfortunately, Supinah is now getting older and starting to get sick.

KUSNIAH. What has Gandrung Kusniah ever done? Gandrung as a profane art of the agrarian society of Osing Banyuwangi originally had a ritual function which was believed to come from the Seblang ritual tradition. A Gandrung must be able to sing and dance alone all night with the Jejer-repen-paju-seblang dawn procession. For that a gandrung must prepare mentally and physically excellent. She must perform certain spiritual practice rituals, as well as taking herbs from nature. For example, during the procession of extortion, she is encouraged to drop the concoction into her nose, drink herbs, body scrubs, face powder masks and massage.

Aekanu, an art observer from Banyuwangi, presented “The Relationship between Osing Herbs and Gandrung” in front of hundreds of spectators from various elements. The activity was held in the Asembly I Jakarta Convention Center at the Traditional Medicine Art Attraction event. Organized by the Directorate of Tradition, Director General of Cultural Values, Arts & Film, Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Aekanu carried 10m of botrowali, katu leaves, raspberry grass, ginger plants, kencur, moringa, sempol, bamboo shoots and various other traditional medicinal plants. She was accompanied by Timbul as a traditional massage expert, explaining some medicinal plants that are already rare but are still used by the Osing people to cure various diseases. Aekanu played angklung paglak music to attract the attention of visitors, accompanied by Gandrung Kusniah’s distinctive vocals.

Kusniah’s role is now increasingly prominent. Kusniah’s vocal strains slowly echoed the song “Layar Kumendung Ombak Umbul Ring Segoro”. Makes the ears goosebumps listening. Kusniah unconsciously shed tears. The atmosphere of the show was getting more interesting on Friday afternoon, July 8, 2011. Kusniah began to hold the face of young passionate Umi who was about to dance, Kusniah began to chant a spell. She demonstrates the use of various herbs that are usually used by compulsion to make her beautiful, with a high-pitched voice and excellent stamina. Herbs or herbs are drunk or incised. While singing a poem that has magical powers, Kusniah puts makeup on Umi’s face, putting omprok on her head. Kusniah slowly turned Umi’s face towards the audience. Kusniah, the herbalist and make-up artist, stood together with Umi. The audience clapped their hands in amazement to see the extraordinary changes in Umi’s face, which had not yet been made up and after makeup, she was given herbs and given a spell. Umi, with a beautiful face, vibrated her graceful, dynamic and aesthetically pleasing body. dancing the Jejer Gandrung dance movement. The audience was hysterical with loud applause echoing in the room.

Gandrung Kusniah in her old age did not leave wealth or live in a decent house. Her dedication and commitment to the preservation of this traditional art deserves thumbs up. According to Aekanu, an art observer from Banyuwangi, when she came to Kusniah’s house, five days before Kusniah died, Even though Kusniah is sick, she is still able to sing Osing’s song. She dedicated her life to the world of traditional art, no matter how sick she was, she couldn’t even move her body. Kusniah died in Banyuwangi, Monday 4 December 2017.


One of the Osing cultural traditions that has been preserved until now is the gandrung dance. It has even become an icon of Banyuwangi Regency. This album is supported by three famous Banyuwangi vocalists, namely Supinah, Kusniah and Sulastri.

Dua penulis lagu masing-masing Tuky Efendi dan S Mamang menyumbang satu komposisi. Musik gandrung terdiri kendang, gong, kethuk, kluncing dan melodi biola.Pukulan kendang dan gesekan biola sangat dominan. Narator/dalang memandu jalannya pentas dalam bahasa Indonesia, Jawa.Sayangnya di album tidak ditulis nama-nama pemain musik pendukung album ini.


Ritual Seblang adalah salah satu ritual upacara masyarakat Osing yang hanya dapat dijumpai di dua desa dalam wilayah kecamatan Glagah, Banyuwangi, yakni desa Bakungan dan Olehsari. Ritual ini dilaksanakan untuk keperluan bersih desa dan tolak bala, agar desa tetap dalam keadaan aman dan tenteram. Ritual ini mirip seperti ritual Sintren di wilayah Cirebon, atau Sanghyang dedari di Pulau Bali.

Penyelenggaraan tari Seblang di dua desa tersebut berbeda waktunya, di desa Olehsari diselenggarakan satu minggu setelah Idul Fitri dengan penari perempuan yang masih perawan, sedangkan di desa Bakungan yang bersebelahan, diselenggarakan seminggu setelah Idul Adha dan penarinya harus perempuan yang sudah menopouse. Namun keduanya juga mempunyai kesamaan, yaitu sama-sama ditarikan selama tujuh hari berturut-turut dalam kondisi sang penari kerasukan (trance) roh leluhur. Para penarinya dipilih secara supranatural oleh seseorang yang biasa disebut masyarakat sekitar dengan Gambuh atau juga dikenal sebagai pawang, dan biasanya penari harus dipilih dari keturunan penari seblang sebelumnya.

SUPINAH. Supinah lahir di Banyuwangi, 10 Oktober 1965.Hanya tamat Sekolah Dasar.Dia tidak menyangka memikili kesempatan menari di beberapa negara seperti Singapura, Korea Utara, Cina, Amerika Serikat dan Australia.Supinah belajar menari Gandrung sejak usia 8 tahun.Hasil dari ketekunannya belajar tari dan vokal mengantarkannya sebagai gandrung profesional pada tahun 1979 saat berusia 14 tahun. Manggung sebagai gandrung terop yang harus mampu menari dan menyanyi semalam suntuk dengan stamina prima. Kualitas suara maupun  paras cantik tetap dijaga, ia jalani hingga tahun 1987.Sejak saat itu Gandrung Supinah hanya sebagai sinden yang mengandalkan vokal dengan “cengkok” dan vibrasi yang khas itu.Suara vokal khas gandrung berwajah wanita desa yang hitam manis inilah yang membawanya laku sebagai pemain sinetron di serial TV.

Berdasarkan catatan dari aekanu, emerhati seni dari Banyuwangi, suara khas Supinah menarik perhatian Garin Nugroho untuk melantunkan gending Impen-impenen dalam filmnya Cinta Dalam Sepotong Roti dan berhasil menjadikan Garin Nugroho sebagai  “The Best Young Director” pada Festival film Asia Pasific di Seoul tahun 1992.

Demi melestarikan seni tradisi Osing,Supinah mendirikan Sanggar Seni Sayu Sarinah di Desa Olehsari Kecamatan Glagah Banyuwangi.Sayangnya Supinah kini makin tua dan mulai sakit-sakitan.

KUSNIAH.Apakah yang pernah dilakukan Gandrung Kusniah? Gandrung sebagai seni profan masyarakat agraris Osing  Banyuwangi semula mempunyai fungsi ritual yang dipercaya berasal dari tradisi ritual Seblang.Seorang Gandrung  harus mampu sendirian menyanyi dan menari semalam suntuk dengan prosesi Jejer-repen-paju-seblang subuh. Untuk itu seorang gandrung harus mempersiapkan mental dan fisik yang prima. Ia harus melakukan ritual laku spiritual tertentu, juga mengasup herbal dari alam. Semisal pada saat prosesi meras dipupuh dengan ditetesi ramuan ke hidungnya, minum jamu, lulur, masker bedak muka juga dengan pijit urut.

Aekanu, pemerhati seni dari Banyuwangi,  mempresentasikan “Hubungan Herbal Osing Dengan Gandrung” di hadapan sekitar ratusan penonton dari berbagai elemen. Kegiatan diadakan  di ruang Asembly I Jakarta Convention Center pada acara Atraksi Seni Pengobatan Tradisional. Diselenggarakan oleh Direktorat Tradisi Dirjen Nilai Budaya,Seni & Film Kementerian Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata. Aekanu memikul 10m  botrowali, daun katu, rumput serakat, tumbuhan jahe, kencur, kelor, sempol, rebung dan berbagai tanaman obat lainnya. Ia didampingi Timbul sebagai ahli pijat tradisional menjelaskan beberapa tanaman obat yang sudah langka namun tetap dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat Osing untuk menyembuhkan berbagai penyakit. Aekanu memainkan musik angklung paglak untuk menarik perhatian pengunjung mengiringi vokal khas yang dilantunkan Gandrung Kusniah.

Peran Kusniah kini makin menonjol. Alunan vokal Kusniah perlahan mengumandangkan gending “Layar Kumendung Ombak Umbul Ring Segoro”. Membuat merinding telinga yang mendengarkan. Kusniah tanpa sadar meneteskan air matanya. Suasana pertunjukan semakin menarik pada Jumat sore tanggal 8 Juli 2011 itu. Kusniah mulai memegang wajah Umi si gandrung muda yang akan menari, Kusniah mulai komat-kamit membaca mantra. Ia memperagakan penggunaan berbagai herbal yang biasanya dimanfaatkan gandrung untuk membuatnya menjadi cantik, suara melengking dan stamina prima. Herbal atau jamu ada yang diminum maupun ditorehkan. Sambil menyanyikan syair yang mempunyai kekuatan magis, Kusniah merias wajah Umi, memasangkan omprok di kepalanya. Dengan perlahan Kusniah membalikkan wajah Umi menghadap penonton. Kusniah sang peracik jamu dan perias ini berdiri bersama-sama Umi.Penonton bertepuk tangan tanda takjub melihat perubahan yang luar biasa wajah Umi yang belum dirias dan sesudah dirias diberi jamu dan diberi mantra.Umi dengan wajah cantik menggetarkan tubuhnya yang gemulai dinamis dan penuh estetika mulai menarikan gerakan tari Jejer Gandrung.Penonton histeris dengan riuhnya tepuk tangan yang menggema di ruangan.

Gandrung Kusniah di masa tuanya memang tidak meninggalkan harta maupun tinggal di rumah yang cukup layak.Pengabdian dan komitmennya pada pelestarian seni tradisi ini patut diacungi jempol.Menurut penuturan Aekanu, pemerhati seni dari Banyuwangi, saat datang ke rumah Kusniah, lima hari sebelum Kusniah  wafat, walau dalam kondisi sakit Kusniah masih sanggup untuk menyanyi gending gending Osing. Dia mendedikasikan hidupnya dalam dunia seni tradisi, tidak peduli  sakit tidak ia rasakan bahkan sampai tubuhnya tidak bisa digerakkan.Kusniah wafat di Banyuwangi, Senin 4 Desember 2017.


Salah satu tradisi budaya Osing yang tetap dilstarikan hingga kini adalah tari gandrung. Bahkan menjadi ikon Kabupaten Banyuwangi.Album ini didukung tiga vokalis gandrung kenamaan Banyuwangi, masing-masing Supinah, Kusniah dan Sulastri.
