Biography

Hearing the name Gumarang Sakti, the people of West Sumatra will remember its founder, Gusmiati Suid. She was born in Parak Jua, Batusangkar, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra, August 16, 1942 and died in Jakarta, September 28, 2001 at the age of 59 years. She is known as a contemporary dance maestro of his time

Gumarang Sakti was founded in 1982 in Batu Sangkar, West Sumatra. The word ‘Gumarang’ means white horse in Minangkabau and ‘sakti’ is strong. Before entering the world of dance, Gusmiati first studied martial arts, which she had known since the age of 4 years. After graduating from Junior High School (SMP), she entered the Religious Teacher School (changed to a Teacher Education School), then entered the ASKI FKIP as a teacher there. While teaching, she combines the arts of dance and music. Therefore, Gusmiati is considered a milestone that brings musical and dance majors closer.

Then Gusmiati and her family moved to Jakarta. With the hope, she could advance his artistic career in the capital. It’s true, Gumarang Sakti has become known to the public and has often won awards.” Gumarang Sakti’s name has spread to other countries, including the United States and several European countries. She has participated in various national and international dance festivals.

Because of her dissatisfaction with the previous Minang dances, which she considered too graceful and standard, such as those in the umbrella dance, plate dance, wave dance and others, she also created the Rantak dance which adopted movements from various martial arts styles that exist in the Minang realm. Almost all of her dance works are out of Minang dance standards, so Gusmiati is considered a rebel figure in the world of dance for the Minangkabau art community.

Apparently Gusmiati’s ideas are considered successful in creating something new and thus won an award at the Indonesian People’s Dance Week in 1978. She has also performed her works abroad several times, including in Lausanne, Switzerland, (1980) and at the “Asia Festival of Theater”. , Dance and Martial Art” in Calcutta, India, (1987). In 1991 she received the “Bessies Award” from New York Dance and Performance. Three years later, the Gumarang Sakti dance studio became the only Asian representative at the 6th Internationalis Tanz Festival dance event in Germany in June 1994. This festival was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of modern dance.

Gusmiati has many services in developing Minangkabau traditional art, in her works she never leaves the Minangkabau traditional identity. Gusmiati Suid is one of the pillars of the development of Minangkabau natural culture.

After Gusmiati’s death in Jakarta in 2001, the leadership of Gumarang Sakti was replaced by hier first son, Boi G. Sakti. He further expanded his dance concept on the basis of the roots of Asian traditions. He also began to package his dance performances with advances in multimedia technology, sound, lighting, and stage layout. Before the show titled ‘Titian Asa’ at GKJ last weekend, Gumarang Sakti last performed in 2009.

At the opening ceremony of the Esplanade Theater on the Bay in Singapore in 2002, Boi G.Sakti also enlivened the event by featuring dancers from the Singapore Dance Theatre.

About Album

This album contains music and songs to accompany the Minang dances by Gusmiati Suid and all the lyrics to the songs are in Minang language. At first the music on this album was intended for students in West Sumatra to learn Minang dance. However, in its development, it turns out that this album has become a reference for Indonesian people who want to learn Minang dance.

Biography

Mendengar nama Gumarang Sakti, masyarakat Sumatera Barat akan teringat kepada pendirinya yang bernama Gusmiati Suid. Beliau lahir di Parak Jua, Batusangkar, Tanah Datar, Sumatra Barat, 16 Agustus 1942 dan meninggal di Jakarta, 28 September 2001 pada umur 59 tahun.  Ia dikenal sebagai seorang maestro tari kontemporer pada masanya.  Gumarang Sakti berdiri pada 1982 silam di Batu Sangkar, Sumatera Barat. Kata ‘Gumarang’ berarti kuda putih di Minangkabau dan ‘sakti’ adalah kuat. Sebelum menggeluti dunia seni tari, Gusmiati terlebih dahulu mendalami ilmu silat yang sudah dikenalnya sejak usia 4 tahun. Selulus dari Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP), ia masuk ke Sekolah Guru Agama (berganti menjadi Sekolah Pendidikan Guru), lalu masuk ke FKIP ASKI dan mengajar. Selama mengajar, ia memadukan seni tari dan musik. Karenanya, Gusmiati dianggap tonggak yang mendekatkan jurusan karawitan dan tari.

Selanjutnya Gusmiati dan keluarganya pindah ke Jakarta. Dengan perpindahan tersebut diharapkan, bisa berbuat banyak di ibukota. Ternyata benar, Gumarang Sakti mulai dikenal masyarakat dan seringkali memenangkan penghargaan.” Nama Gumarang Sakti makin berkibar hingga ke luar negeri, termasuk Amerika Serikat dan beberapa Negara di Eropa. Berbagai festival tari tingkat nasional dan internasional diikutinya.

Karena ketidak-puasannya terhadap tarian Minang sebelumnya, yang dianggapnya terlalu gemulai dan baku, seperti yang ada dalam tari payung, tari piring, tari gelombang dan lainnya, ia pun menciptakan tari Rantak yang mengadopsi gerakan dari berbagai aliran silat yang ada di Ranah Minang. Hampir semua karya tarinya keluar dari pakem tari Minang, sehingga Gusmiati dianggap sebagai tokoh pemberontak di dunia seni tari bagi masyarakat seni Minangkabau.

Rupanya ide-ide Gusmiati dianggap berhasil menciptakan sesuatu yang baru sehingga memperoleh penghargaan di Pekan Tari Rakyat Indonesia pada tahun 1978. Ia juga telah beberapa kali mementaskan karyanya di luar negeri, diantaranya di Lausanne, Swiss, (1980) dan di “Asia Festival of Theatre, Dance and Martial Art” di Calcutta, India, (1987). Pada tahun 1991 ia menerima penghargaan “Bessies Award” dari New York Dance and Performance. Tiga tahun kemudian Sanggar tari Gumarang Sakti menjadi satu-satunya wakil Asia di dalam acara tari Internationalis Tanz Festival ke-6 di Jerman pada bulan Juni tahun 1994. Festival ini diselenggarakan untuk memperingati 100 tahun lahirnya tari modern.

Gusmiati memiliki banyak jasa dalam mengembangkan seni tradisi Minangkabau, dalam karya-karyanya ia tak pernah meninggalkan identitas tradisi Minangkabau dalam karya seni tari yang bertaraf nasional bahkan internasional. Gusmiati Suid merupakan salah satu pilar pengembang budaya alam Minangkabau.

Selepas dari meninggalnya Gusmiati di Jakarta pada tahun 2001 kepemimpinan Gumarang Sakti digantikan oleh putra pertamanya Boi G. Sakti. Dia lebih meluaskan konsep tariannya pada pijakan akar tradisi Asia. Ia pun mulai mengemas seni pertunjukan tarinya dengan kemajuan teknologi multimedia, sound, pencahayaan, dan tata panggung. Sebelum pertunjukan bertajuk ‘Titian Asa’ di GKJ, Gumarang Sakti terakhir pentas pada 2009 silam.

Pada saat acara pembukaan Esplanade Theatre on the Bay di Singapura pada tahun 2002 Boi G.Sakti turut memeriahkan acara dengan menampilkan penari-penari dari Singapore Dance Theatre.

Album ini berisikan music dan lagu untuk mengiringi tari-tarian Minang karya Gusmiati Suid dan semua syair lagunya berbahasa Minang. Pada awalnya music di album ini ditujukan untuk para pelajar di Sumatera Barat mempelajari tari Minang. Namun dalam perkembangannya ternyata album ini menjadi rujukan di bagi masyarakat Indonesia yang ingin mempelajari tari Minang.
