Romania

is the 43rd country guest to visit the MMI website. Is there any relationship between Romania and Rome? It turns out that the Romans once controlled the territory of this country.

Romania is a country located in Central Europe slightly to the southeast. It is neighbors with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. The national anthem is entitled Desteapta-te Romane.

The country of Romania was born in 1859 from the unification of the Moldavia and Wallachia regions, and 19 years later it only gained international recognition. At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union occupied part of its territory and Romania became a member of the Warsaw Pact. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Romania embarked on political and economic reforms.

Romanian identity began to be formed from the influence of Roman, Dacian and Slavic cultures. Its modern culture developed under the influence of French and German culture.

Folk music is the oldest form of Romanian musical heritage. The preservation of Romanian folk music has been helped by the great care of the community, as well as by many performers who propagate and further develop folk music. One of them, Gheorghe Zamfir which until now is famous throughout the world for popularizing the traditional Romanian folk instrument, the panpipe. One of Zamfir’s works has been stored on MMI in cassette form.

From the rock line there is the Iris group which was founded in 1977. They are successful with their albums and tours throughout Romania. At the 2006 MTV Romania Music Awards, Iris won the “Best Rock Award”.

Iris recordings are also already saved in MMI. The physical form is a 7” LP or the term EP, Extended Play. It is titled Chrysalide and is produced by a Romanian label, Sonopresse Connection. This recording is available at MMI thanks to the donation of Sofiane Bilal, a friend of MMI who lives in Paris, France.

In the 70s there was a German song which surprisingly became a hit almost all over the world, including in Indonesia. The title of the song is very economical, only uses two letters, DU with singer Peter Maffay. It turned out that Peter was born in Romania, precisely in the city of Brasov in 1949. Two of his LPs and one cassette have also been stored in MMI, including the song whose title was very frugal.

Apart from these three names, there are several other Romanian artists whose works are also stored in MMI. They are Anca Vartolome, Aurel Giroveanu, Barbie Constantinescu, Doina Nemteanu Rotaru, Doina Spataru, Floron Bogardo, Gyorgy Ligeti, Ileana Sararoui, Jean Paunescu, Ludovic Baci, Luminita Dobrescu, Marieta Bratinu, Mihaela Muhai, Motiu Special, and Rodica Paliu. In addition, there are the names of ten solo singers whose beautiful voices are summarized in the LP album entitled Romante.

Maybe what is in the new museum is a small part of the works of Romanian artists. Hopefully there are friends from Romania who read this article and are moved to add to the Romanian music collection on MMI.

Romania

(HHW).
