Biography

Charles Hutagalung (born in Medan, October 14, 1948) is a well-known vocalist and songwriter in Indonesia. Charles has known music since childhood in his hometown of Medan, North Sumatra. He had played the piano quite well when he was little because he took piano lessons. Even in his spare time, he plays a boy band with his friends. After being a teenager, he played in a band in the city of Medan by being involved in the band Victim’s. After that he joined the band Bhayangkara Nada. Then joined the music group The Mercy’s, The Ge & Ge.

Charles Hutagalung is also better known as a solo singer and songwriter. His days are busy with his studio CHG Record’s, because that’s where he works, pouring his inspiration. His songs were made to be sung by himself or by other singers he mentored. He has composed many songs for a number of singers from the Flower Sound company such as: Emilia Contessa, Vivi & Nita, Emma Ratna Fury, Liza Tanzil, etc. As a songwriter, Charles Hutagalung was successful in creating famous songs at that time, such as the song “In Kerinduan” which was re-released sung by Dewi Yull. “Hidupku Sunyi” was re-recorded in a country rhythm sung by Tantowi Yahya. Similarly, the Batak song sung by Emilia Contessa with the title “Inang” was also successfully performed by several other singers. The song has even become one of the eternal mandatory songs of the world of Batak pop music to this day. In addition, the spiritual song, “The Redeemer of Sins” is still reverberating and the Christmas song, “Memories of Christmas in Little Village,” is still being re-released every year.

Some of Charles Hutagalung’s songs were also included in the National Popular Song Festival, such as the song “Curiga”. Meanwhile, the Hygiene Song Festival held by the Governor of DKI Jakarta with the title “Jakarta True Faith” won first place.

Charles Hutagalung died in Jakarta, May 7, 2001.

Story

Seven songs by Asbon Madjid on Charles Hutagalung’s Pop Minang album entitled: Laruik Sano, Sayang Tak Already, Baju Kuruang, Buruak Pinto, La Olai, Di Kampuang, Takana Adiek. Based on data from the book Gumarang Orchestra The Story of Syaiful Nawas, Fadli Zon, Fadli Zon Library, Jakarta, 2017, Asbon Madjid was born in Sibolga, North Sumatra, May 8, 1926. Both of his parents are from Tanjung Alam, Tabek Patah, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra The third of seven children, this primary and junior secondary education in Padang (1937-1940). Then he continued his education at HIS Taman Sari until 1943. Even though he was forbidden to play music, Asbon did not budge.

At the age of twelve, Asbon studied various musical styles, ranging from keroncong, gambus and gamad. In Padang, in 1938, together with Zainul Bahar, Asbon founded the Hawaiian the Smiling Player orchestra. He became a singer and guitarist in the orchestra (1938-1944). Apart from performing at Dutch dance parties and night markets in Padang, this orchestra also performs music broadcasts on Sie Radio Omroep. While on tour to Medan, Hawaiian the Smiling Player was asked to fill the broadcast on Nirom radio, Medan.

During the Japanese colonial period in Indonesia, Asbon became a piston player in the Japanese Dai Nippon Army Music Corps. At that time, Asbon was involved as an actor, singer and musician in the Sandiwara Ratu Asia group led by Syamsuddin Sufei. Meanwhile, the Queen Asia music group was led by Zubir Said, a Minang resident who also composed Singapore’s national anthem, Forward Singapore.

In addition to taking part in music, Asbon is also involved in the military world. He was a Padang Student Army member and a member of the Tri Division Banteng, Bukittinggi. During the Indonesian independence revolution, Asbon, who was a musician, remained active as a soldier. He was mostly engaged in intelligence. After the independence revolution, Asbon worked at RRI Jakarta. Then he joined the Gumarang Orchestra which at that time was in the transition period of leadership from Anwar Arif to Alidir. Asbon Madjid became the leader of the Gumarang Orchestra in 1955. Asbon Madjid died in Jakarta, March 8, 2004.

Value

The Minang Charles Hutagalung Pop album is a testament to the diversity of Indonesian culture. Charles Hutagalung of Batak blood sang Minang rhythmic songs. At the same time this proved Charles Hutagalung’s great talent as a vocalist who was able to sing Minang rhythmic songs well. Minang had a major contribution to Indonesian music, including through the Gumarang Orchestra (founded in Jakarta, 1954). One of the personnel and leader of the Gumarang Orchestra is Asbon Madjid who contributed 7 songs on this album.

Biography

Charles Hutagalung lahir di Medan, 14 Oktober 1948 adalah vokalis dan penulis lagu kenamaan di Indonesia. Charles telah mengenal musik sejak kecil di kota kelahirannya Medan, Sumatra Utara. Ia sudah memainkan piano cukup baik saat usianya masih kecil karena mengikuti les piano. Bahkan dalam kesenggangan waktunya sudah bermain band bocah bersama teman-teman sepermainannya. Sesudah remaja bermain band di kota Medan dengan ikut terlibat dalam band Victim’s. Setelah itu ia masuk ke dalam band Bhayangkara Nada. Selanjutnya bergabung  dengan grup musik The Mercy’s, The Ge & Ge.

Charles Hutagalung  juga lebih dikenal sebagai penyanyi solo dan pencipta lagu. Hari-harinya disibukkan dengan studio miliknya CHG Record’s, karena di situlah dia berkarya, menuangkan inspirasinya. Lagu-lagu ciptaannya dibuatnya untuk dinyanyikan sendiri atau penyanyi lain yang dibimbingnya. Ia banyak menciptakan lagu untuk sejumlah penyanyi dari perusahaan Flower Sound seperti: Emilia Contessa, Vivi & Nita, Emma Ratna Fury, Liza Tanzil, dll. Sebagai pencipta lagu Charles Hutagalung tergolong sukses menciptakan lagu-lagu terkenal saat itu, seperti lagu “Dalam Kerinduan” yang dirilis ulang dinyanyikan oleh Dewi Yull. “Hidupku Sunyi” direkam kembali dalam irama country yang dinyanyikan oleh Tantowi Yahya. Demikian pula lagu Bataknya yang dinyanyikan oleh Emilia Contessa dengan judul “Inang” juga sukses dibawakan oleh beberapa penyanyi lain. Lagu tersebut bahkan menjadi salah satu lagu wajib abadi dari dunia musik pop Batak hingga saat ini. Selain itu lagu rohaninya, “Si Penebus Dosa” sampai sekarang masih berkumandang dan lagu Natalnya, “Kenangan Natal di Dusun Kecil,” sampai sekarang setiap tahun tetap dirilis ulang.

Beberapa lagu-lagu ciptaan Charles Hutagalung juga masuk dalam ajang Festival Lagu Populer Tingkat Nasional seperti lagu “Curiga”. Sedangkan Festival Lagu Kebersihan yang diadakan Gubernur DKI Jakarta dengan judul “Jakarta Teguh Beriman” berhasil meraih juara pertama.

Charles Hutagalung wafat di Jakarta,7 Mei 2001.

Tujuh lagu karya Asbon Madjid di album Pop Minang Charles Hutagalung berjudul: Laruik Sano, Sayang Tak Sudah, Baju Kuruang, Buruak Pinto, La Olai, Di Kampuang, Takana Adiek. Berdasarkan data dari buku Orkes Gumarang Kisah Syaiful Nawas, Fadli Zon, Fadli Zon Library, Jakarta, 2017, Asbon Madjid lahir di Sibolga, Sumatera Utara, 8 Mei 1926.Kedua orang tuanya berasal dari Tanjung Alam, Tabek Patah, Tanah Datar, Sumatera Barat.Anak ketiga dari tujuh bersaudara ini menempuh pendidikan dasar dan menengah pertama di Padang (1937-1940). Kemudian melanjutkan pendidikan di HIS Taman Sari sampai tahun 1943. Walau dilarang bermain musik, Asbon bergeming.

Pada usia dua belas tahun, Asbon mempelajari berbagai corak musik, mulai dari keroncong, gambus dan gamad. Di Padang, tahun 1938, bersama Zainul Bahar, Asbon mendirikan orkes Hawaiian the Smiling Player. Ia menjadi penyanyi sekaligus gitaris di orkes tersebut (1938-1944). Selain tampil dalam acara pesta dansa orang-orang Belanda dan pasar malam di Padang, orkes ini juga mengisi siaran musik di Sie Radio Omroep. Saat mengadakan tur ke Medan, Hawaiian the Smiling Player didaulat mengisi siaran di radio Nirom, Medan.

Saat masa penjajahan Jepang di Indonesia, Asbon menjadi pemain piston dalam Korps Musik Tentara Dai Nippon Jepang. Di zaman itu juga, Asbon terlibat sebagai aktor, penyanyi dan pemusik dalam group Sandiwara Ratu Asia pimpinan Syamsuddin Sufei. Sedangkan khusus group musik Ratu Asia dipimpin Zubir Said, warga Minang yang juga menciptakan lagu kebangsaan Singapura, Majulah Singapura.

Selain berkiprah di musik, Asbon juga terlibat dalam dunia kemiliteran.Ia pernah menjadi Tentara Pelajar Padang dan anggota Tri Divisi Banteng, Bukittinggi.Pada masa revolusi kemerdekaan Indonesia, Asbon yang merupakan seorang pemusik  tetap aktif sebagai tentara.Ia banyak bergerak dibidang intelijen. Selepas masa revolusi kemerdekaan, Asbon bekerja di RRI Jakarta. Kemudian bergabung dengan Orkes Gumarang yang waktu itu dalam masa transisi kepemimpinan dari Anwar Arif ke Alidir. Asbon Madjid menjadi pimpinan Orkes Gumarang tahun 1955. Asbon Madjid wafat di Jakarta, 8 Maret 2004.

Album Pop Minang Charles Hutagalung merupakan bukti keanekaragaman budaya Indonesia. Charles Hutagalung berdarah Batak melantunkan lagu-lagu berirama Minang.Sekaligus membuktikan talenta besar Charles Hutagalung sebagai vokalis yang mampu menyanyikan lagu-lagu berirama Minang dengan baik.Minang memiliki kontribusi besar dalam musik Indonesia antara lain lewat Orkes Gumarang (berdiri di Jakarta, 1954). Salah satu personil dan pimpinan Orkes Gumarang adalah Asbon Madjid yang menyumbang 7 lagu di album ini.
