Biography
Little is known about Ida Farida. According to various sources, Ida Farida was an dangdut musician in the 70-80s era. Ida Farida released many albums and singles that were loved by music lovers at that time. Ida Farida is diligent in honing her vocal skills in Cipinang Bali, East Jakarta, to be exact, the house of Mr. Robiso. Her releases were often screened on radios, and film shows were on the screen during that era. Ida Farida’s works have also inspired other singers such as Elvy Sukaesih, where she also makes covers of Ida Farida’s songs. Although little information is known about Ida Farida, not a few people think that Ida Farida’s works are unforgettable masterpieces, many of them feel that Ida Farida’s works always give a nostalgic feel, and evoke fond memories of their past.
Likewise with Alif S, little information can be found regarding him. Alif S is one of the pioneers of kendang kempul music in Banyuwangi. Alif S has the real name Khoirul Alif. Kendang kempul is an ethnic music that developed in Banyuwangi. This music was originally just called Banyuwangi music which is an innovation of gandrung music. This music grew in 1955 with the establishment of art studios supported by organizations under the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). In the period 1966-1973 this music had suspended, due to the assumption that this music is closely related to PKI.
In 1973 Banyuwangi music re-emerged and since then it is better known as Kendang Kempul music. This music is called kendang kempul because the musical instruments that stand out when used are kendang, kempul, and flute. Kendang Kempul music is an asset of Indonesian history, and a traditional music that needs to be preserved.
Story
Kendang kempul is an ethnic music that developed in Banyuwangi. Songs from gandrung music became the forerunner to the birth of kendang kempul music. Some gandrung artists first sing gandrung songs without using a refrain. The songs that were first created by the artists at that time were songs with the titles “keriping mustard greens” and “keok-keok”. This music grew with the birth of the angklung musical instrument around the 1920s. Banyuwangi music developed more dynamically in 1955 with the establishment of art studios supported by LEKRA (People’s Arts Institute) which is an art organization under the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). Even the song “genjer-genjer” which is synonymous with the 1965 PKI movement is the creation of a Banyuwangi artist named Mohammad Arief whose verse tells about the suffering of local residents when they were colonized by Japanese troops.
In the period 1966-1973 Banyuwangi music had suspended animation, because of the assumption that this art symbolize PKI. In 1973 Banyuwangi music re-emerged and since then it is better known as Kendang Kempul music. The mention of kendang kempul music because at that time the musical instruments that stood out when used to accompany the singers singing were the kendang, kempul and flute musical instruments. The figure who re-introduced/popularized kempul kendang is Sutrisno. As time passed, the development of kendang kempul music grew rapidly. If around the 1990s the Banyuwangi song lovers only knew the names Sumiati, Cahyono (the comedian from the Jayakarta group), Suliana and Alif S as kendang kempul singers, then at the end of the late 1990s the names of new singers with musical innovations began to emerge. enrich the repertoire of kendang kempul music itself.
The late 1990s generation included Niken Arisandy, Reny Farida, Adestya Mayasari, Ratna Antika, Dian Ratih and many more. While in the ranks of songwriters there are Hawadin, Yon’s DD, as well as singer-songwriter and founder of the kendang kempul art group POB (Patrol Orchestra Banyuwangi) Catur Arum. Even the singer Nini Karlina before becoming a dangdut singer and moving to Jakarta was a Kendang Kempul singer. The dangdut version of the Bracelet Alit song sung by Ikke Nurjanah was originally a kendang kempul song with the same title. As more and more musical references enter and influence the kendang kempul song, this song automatically becomes more dynamic. If in the early days of the emergence of musical instruments, mostly traditional instruments, now modern musical instruments such as guitars, keyboards and drums are added to make this music more dynamic. In fact, since the last 4 years, elements of dangdut koplo and rock music have also added to the repertoire of Banyuwangi’s original music.
Some time ago there was also the name of a Dutch tourist who came specifically to Banyuwangi to learn the Oseng language while learning to sing the kendang kempul song. Even the Caucasian named Richardo Benito had time to sing along in several kendang kempul music performances in Banyuwangi. Benito also confidently uploads the song he sings on the Youtube site even though the music he sings is no longer the original kendang kempul like it first appeared until the late 1990s.

The existence of music in Banyuwangi cannot be separated from the history of Banyuwangi. The history of Banyuwangi, which is full of drama, from social to political dramas, has a series of elements that have shaped the unity of Banyuwangi to become what it is today. Karya-karya rilisannya seringkali diputar di radio-radio, dan pertunjukan film layar tancap pada era tersebut. Karya-karya dari Ida Farida juga menginspirasi penyanyi lain seperti halnya Elvy Sukaesih. Meskipun sedikit informasi yang diketahui terkait Ida Farida, namun tidak sedikit masyarakat yang beranggapan mahakarya nya tak terlupakan. Alif S memiliki nama asli Khoirul Alif. Dia lahir dari pasangan Abu Bakar seorang warga keturunan Pakistan dan Masratik Akim. Menurut sahabat-sahabatnya, Alif S adalah sosok yang sangat mencintai seni dan seorang seniman bertalenta tinggi.

Pada periode 1966-1973 musik ini sempat mati suri, karena adanya anggapan bahwa kesenian ini berbau PKI.
Pada tahun 1973 musik Banyuwangi kembali muncul dan sejak itu lebih dikenal dengan nama musik Kendang Kempul. Musik ini disebut dengan kendang kempul karena alat musik yang menonjol saat digunakan adalah alat musik kendang, kempul dan suling. Musik Kendang Kempul merupakan aset sejarah Indonesia, dan sebuah musik tradisional yang perlu dilestarikan.
Story
Banyuwangi, nama kabupaten di ujung timur pulau Jawa. Meski terletak di pulau Jawa, tapi daerah ini didiami oleh suku lain. Mereka menamakan diri mereka sebagai suku Osing, dan bukan bagian dari suku Jawa. Bahasa yang mereka gunakan pun bukanlah bahasa Jawa seperti umumnya orang yang tinggal di daerah Jawa Timur, Jawa Tengah, Jogja. Bahasa Osing merupakan bahasa turunan langsung dari Bahasa Jawa kuno seperti halnya bahasa Bali. Memang ada beberapa kosakata dari bahasa Osing yang mirip dengan bahasa Jawa ataupun bahasa Bali, tapi dengan arti yang berbeda. Banyuwangi memiliki seni budaya yang unik. Seni budaya itu antara lain Gandrung, Patrol, Seblang, Tari barong, Kuntulan, Janger, Jaranan Jedor dan Angklung Caruk serta Kendang Kempul.
Kendang kempul merupakan musik etnik yang berkembang di Banyuwangi. Lagu-lagu dari musik gandrung menjadi cikal bakal lahirnya musik kendang kempul. Beberapa seniman gandrung pertama kali menyanyikan lagu-lagu gandrung tanpa menggunakan reffrain. Lagu-lagu yang pertama kali diciptakan oleh para seniman waktu itu adalah lagu dengan judul “keriping sawi” dan “keok-keok”. Musik ini semakin berkembang dengan lahirnya alat musik angklung sekitar tahun 1920-an.
Seiring dengan bergulirnya waktu, maka perkembangan musik kendang kempul makin pesat. Jika disekitar tahun 1990-an penikmat lagu Banyuwangi hanya mengenal nama Sumiati, Cahyono, Suliana dan Alif S sebagai penyanyi kendang kempul. Maka di akhir 1990-an mulai muncul nama-nama penyanyi baru dengan inovasi musik yang semakin memperkaya khasanah kendang kempul itu sendiri.
Generasi 1990-an akhir itu antara lain Niken Arisandy, Reny Farida, Adestya Mayasari, Ratna Antika, Dian Ratih dan masih banyak lagi. Sedang di jajaran pencipta lagu ada nama Hawadin, dan Yon’s DD. Serta penyanyi sekaligus pencipta lagu serta pendiri grup seni kendang kempul POB (Patrol Orchestra Banyuwangi) Catur Arum. Bahkan penyanyi Nini Karlina sebelum jadi penyanyi dangdut dan hijrah ke Jakarta dulunya adalah penyanyi Kendang Kempul. Lagu Gelang Alit versi dangdut yang dinyanyikan oleh Ikke Nurjanah aslinya adalah lagu kendang kempul dengan judul yang sama.
Value
Akulturasi musik lokal Banyuwangi dengan genre musik lain menghasilkan musik kendang kempul yang terus berkembang dan eksis. Jika di awal kemunculannya hanya dimainkan dengan alat musik tradisional, maka kini mulai dipadukan dengan alat musik modern. Bahkan sejak sekitar empat tahun terakhir, unsur musik dangdut koplo serat rock juga ikut menambah khasanah musik asli Banyuwangi ini.
