Biography

Rudi van Dalm Born in Bangka, on February 25, 1927. He is a singer and guitarist of Dutch descent in the Dutch East Indies.

In the 1950s he toured Java, New Guinea and Australia as a guitarist. In 1960 he came to the Netherlands. In his hometown of Arnhem, he founded The Royal Rhythmics with which he performed at local nightclubs. In 1963 he won a talent contest hosted by John Kristel and signed a record deal. The first album was released in 1964 and the lineup was active until the late 1970s.

About Album

In this album, the songs sung are songs from various regions, but most of them are Maluku folk songs. Together with his children, they made an album under the name Rudi van Dalm and his Raindrops. The music he makes is considered Indo pop music

Story

In 1960 Rudi came to the Netherlands to establish the formation of The Royal Rhythmics. Over the years he played with great success at Corona Nachtclub and Blue Bell Bar Dancing in Nijmegen. In 1963 the group consisted of purely Dutch musicians outside of Rudy.

In 1963 he became the winner of the annual talent show organized by orchestra leader John Kristel in the soloist category. At that time he also entered into a recording contract with the Funckler Label and was recorded by Artone Records. The first single with arrangements of old Malay songs such as Terang Boelan, Lenggang Kangkoeng and Mama in late 1963. Willy Langestraat alias Billy Longstreet was the producer, and he himself played organ and percussion instruments during studio recording.

The specialty of the recording is because of The Royal Rhythmics. In these songs as a compact instrumental, only interrupted by a few verses sung by Rudy. Original old melodies mixed with modern rock instrumentals.

In 1964 a very successful solo single by Rudy was also released. Specifically: Why Are You Crying?. His own adaptation and interpretation of the Malaysian song “Kenapa kamu menagis?”, Nona Manis or Goodbye To You, Nona Manis. To this day he managed to break everyone’s heart during his performance with this song.

Until 1967 Rudy van Dalm made a whole series of records for the Funckler label. A number of singles were accompanied by The Four Guitars (perhaps a studio orchestra). In 1966, 12 traditional Malaysian songs from previously composed singles appeared on the LP “Introducing”. The mix of folk songs with rock instrumentals can classify Rudy & The Royal Rhythmics’ repertoire as Indo-Rock. Finally, all recordings are classified as Indo-Pop.

The Royal Rhythmics existed until the 1970s with Boy Tahelele (former The Black Magic and Hondo Rockers) on bass guitar since 1965. Then Rudy and his daughter formed the orchestra Rudy van Dalm & The Raindrops.
