Lokanata Vinyl Record

The historical records of Lokanata can be found in various writings that are spread on the internet. Several books and articles in print media were also documenting the history of this government-owned record company.

However, there is only one book that is sufficiently detailed to discuss the vinyl record products that are printed and published by Lokananta. We need to give our appreciation to Philip Yampolsky who has compiled a book entitled “Lokananta; A Discography of the National Recording Company of Indonesia 1957-1985”. A copy of this book is one of the special collections of the Museum Musik Indonesia.

There are 3 types of standard vinyl record sizes, namely 7” diameter which is usually termed EP (Extended Play), 10” diameter, and 12” diameter, which both of them are also known as LP (Long Play).

In this book, Philip details the albums that Lokananta has released were based on these 3 size groups. Each group has several codes based on the type of music. For instance, for 10” LPs, there are ARD, ALD, ARI, DN, AD, and AI series. For the 12” size, the BRD and BRI series were given. While the CRE series is used for the small size, 7".

The important information presented by Yampolski is about the year of production of each series, some of which are even equipped with dates. This is such rare data. Almost all vinyl records published in Indonesia are not equipped with the year of production or the year of publication.

There are 323 vinyl record titles presented in this book and sorted by ALD, ARD, ARI, BRD, BRI, CRE, DN, AD, and AIE series. The oldest production is the ALD-001 series which was pressed on June 11, 1959. And the most recent production of the album series is DN-039, on June 1, 1973.

Furthermore, there is much more important information in this book. We will rewrite it at the next opportunity.
